What can we do for you?

"If you want to make a movie, make it. Don't wait for a grant, don't wait for the perfect circumstances, just make it."
— Quentin Tarantino

Available Equipment

"Failure is unimportant. It takes courage to make a fool of oneself."
— Charlie Chaplin

No more talking about that film you're going to make, we've got all the equipment you need to get started. Everything is rented out free of charge to Film Soc members, just call down to room LG19 and talk to us about what you need.

Weekly Film Screenings

"For some reason I'm more appreciated in France than I am back home. The subtitles must be incredibly good."
— Woody Allen

We're showing a different movie every Wednesday at 7pm, incorporating all genres from classic to comic, Film Noir to Hollywood blockbusters. Drunken but passionate criticisms to be found afterwards in the student bar.

Know of a film we should really all see before we die? Send us an email or drop in to room LG19 to let us know, and we'll do our best to screen it sometime this school year.

Reviews of the week's chosen screening and the location will be posted on this site every Thursday evening.

Stephen's Scriptwriting Workshop

"To make a great film you need three things: a script, a script, and a script."
— Alfred Hitchcock

Stephen Cadwell will be teaching a scriptwriting workshop every Monday evening at 6pm in lecture theatre O. Everybody welcome except Cardassians. No experience necessary.

National Student Film Festival

"When people say 'I'm not a prude, but...' what they mean is 'I am a prude, and...'"
— John Cleese

Beatrice Ni Bhroin

Society Auditor
Having spent part of the summer working on the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival, Beatrice has lots of ideas for the coming year — and this being her second year in the position of Auditor, she must be doing something right.

Beatrice is a final year English & Art History student, so you can usually find her somewhere in the Arts Block, but when she's not in college she works for Setanta Sports Studios and freelances, including transcribing for Blinder Films.

Her interests include film, art, politics, sport, dancing, speaking Irish, and food — as long as it never had a face.

Clodagh Power

Film Society Secretary
Clodagh's first experience with film was when her big brothers forced her to watch horror flicks in an attempt to scare the bejaysus out of her. Well, they failed. Ha! With its roots in the darker side of the human psyche, horror is now her main passion — yes, she says, the genre is a lot smarter than it lets on.

Clodagh's main influences include Joss Whedon, Quentin Tarantino and Rob Zombie, and she has made two short films with friends; one too appalling to mention and the other almost completed — bar the random dance sequence at the end. David Lynch couldn't hold a candle to it!

When she's not making films, Clodagh is a second year Arts student taking English, Classsics and electives in Film Studies.

James Lastname

Production Manager
James is interested in nearly every aspect of film, and his ambition is to write, direct, and produce all his own movies — and use his experience at the Gaiety School of Acting to star in them as well. This is his first year on the committee, but last year he made his first short, and he has taken courses in acting for the camera and creative writing as well.

If the film industry doesn't work out for him, James intends to use his English & History degree to go for teaching, which has nothing to do with the long holidays and everything to do with helping the kids... he swears.

Stephen Cadwell

Chief Technical Officer
Stephen's position on the committee was designed to reflect that of Miles O'Brien from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Both hardworking Drumcondronians, they hate the Cardassians and spend their time fixing things, setting things up, and ensuring everything is in full working order.

Stephen is also a qualified digital editor who's been paid to do just about every job on a film set at one point or another, meaning most of his work for the film society is based around the production and technical side of the screenings. He also likes to write screenplays, and will be running the scriptwriting workshops this term. Everyone's welcome to come along, except Cardassians. No experience necessary.

Sarah Ridge

Treasurer
There are only three words fit to describe the society's treasurer: money, money, and money.

David Cummins

Creation Officer
College life has been great fun for David as he's reaped the benefits of taking a committee role in everything he does. A former film student now studying economics, he has written several screenplays and plays and has made four films and helped out in others.

David firmly believes in trying to do better next time, as his best is yet to come. He firmly believes this, he says, otherwise he's screwed.

David Cluxton

Screening and Guest Coordinator
In another life, David studied psychoanalysis and philosophy. In this one he studies law and is in charge of the society's weekly film screenings and the appearance of guest speakers. His mission is to screen films that people wouldn't normally encounter, or to show a popular film from a new angle, while not discouraging people from actually turning up in the first place.

When he's not working on this impossible task, David is an Arsenal fan who likes to read, cook, travel and watch football, and has written numerous scripts and storyboards for films that he intends to make at some point prior to his 65th birthday.

Aside from the no. 10 bus driver, David is one of the few Northsiders who goes to UCD.

John Lastname

Title
The Film Society has been a great opportunity for John — a nuclear scientist from the grim part of Dublin — as it's given him kudos for knowledge he doesn't possess. Always glad to help, just ask him the name of any film, actor, or director and he'll be able to tell you the first thing that comes into his head. Like “I’m hungry” or “Where is the station?”.

John appears courtesy of cobwebs, seaweed and Gin ‘n’ Tonic, and when he's not on the phone to NASA he enjoys watching The Den.
